An Interview with Lucas Scarfone

Lucas Scarfone is one of the fastest up and coming photographers in the automotive photography industry. Based out of Ontario, Canada, Lucas has built an amazing portfolio full of the most exotic and expensive automobiles in the world. We get a glimpse behind the lens in this exclusive Q&A with Car Lover Gift Guide.

Why photography?
I actually got into photography because of the cars themselves. My parents would drive me to different track days, car shows, and other automotive events. I started off taking pictures to document all the amazing cars I would see, soon I started to develop a creative style that made me try and push the envelope more and more.

What made you focus on the “Detail” style you are known for?

I always love when people look at one of my photos and ask themselves “what type of the car is this”? Many of my clients are very passionate about their cars, but through my photos I try and present them with images that showcase all the small details and unique features that really make their car special. My goal is to bring them on an in depth tour of their stunning automobile through my lens.

What has been your favorite experience in your career so far?
I have to say that I have been very lucky, I get to do a lot of fun and interesting things every year and every shoot is different. One of the highlights was a series of photos I did a few years back with private jet’s and cars. We had access to a beautiful Hawker jet on the private tarmac at Pearson International Airport, as well as several amazing exotic cars. We had to pass through security checks and deal with freezing cold weather, but the end results were amazing. It’s always exciting to see what opportunities present themselves as I continue my photograph career.

Where is your favorite place to shoot?
I feel most at home shooting at the race track. I am very lucky to be close to Mosport International Raceway which is a world class race track that hosts several lapping days and major automotive events. I love being able to capture the dynamics of these cars under breaking, cornering, and acceleration. I think it adds a very interesting element to the photo that evokes the sense of speed for the viewer. I’ve been lucky enough to be taken for several rides around the track in some very unique cars.

What is the best part of your job?
This is a tough one. I’m very lucky to be able to say that I absolutely LOVE my job. I get to shoot some of the most exotic vehicles in the world, meet passionate owners and enthusiasts, and have some great experiences, all while getting paid. I can’t imagine doing anything else as a profession, and I’m very blessed that I can look forward to working on a daily basis. All the elements of my job feel like they are the “best” for me.

What do you drive?
A 2009 Toyota Matrix. I have to tell you, getting back into my car after driving an exotic is a bit of a let down, but I do love my car. I bought it brand new when I was 19 and have driven 110,000 km’s in the last 2 years. My goal is to eventually own one of the beautiful cars I photograph, but until then I have no qualms with loading all my gear into the back of my Matrix and setting out on the road for my next shoot!

Where do you see opportunity for improvement?

The next biggest step for me is the jump into external lighting. Almost all of my photo shoots have been done using natural light, but I would love to learn how to properly light and shoot a vehicle using external lighting. I’ve seen a lot of photographers who use this method and the results are absolutely amazing. It takes a tremendous amount of dedication and talent but I’m hoping to slowly learn this great technique and apply it to my future photo shoots. You can never stop learning in the industry so I am looking forward to improving my skills and images.
