The exhibition “Warhol and Cars: America Icons” can be seen at the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh until May 13, 2012.
Andy Warhol the gear head? Throughout his career he kept revisiting the subject of automobiles highlighted by the Art Car Project for BMW. Andy Warhol’s “Green Car Crash” from the “Death and Disaster Series” sold for an unbelievable $71,720,000 at Christie’s Contemporary Evening Sale in 2007. Back then, the all time auction record for Warhol.
Warhol wasn’t the only famous artist who ventured out to cover automobiles. Remember the Jeff Koons projects for Mini and BMW or all the other artists that participated in the BMW Art Car Project back in the days?
In more recent time, Laurence Gartel, “The father of digital art”, gained worldwide recognition for his Auto Motion Series and his art cars have been displayed all over the US. Laurence by the way, was the person, who taught Andy Warhol how to use computers.

One of the reasons that older cars so often look much more outdated than their actual age would suggest is poor lighting. Sometimes, issues such as these can be fixed fairly quickly.
